For the
last two years our school has had a campus wide Culture Day Celebration where
students take time out of their schedule to learn about different cultures of
the world. This year we had each grade level focus on one particular
culture with only exception being 5th grade who got to decide what culture of
the world they wanted to learn about. My students were given the
challenge of researching, designing, and executing a three dimensional version
of a cultural mask. Students were given full choice as to what materials
they would use to create these so the medium ranged from paper to mache,
cardboard, Styrofoam, and recycled trash. Below are just some of the
examples the students were able to create. We set up some tables in the
school library on Culture Day for the whole school to come through and have a
gallery walk showcasing all the hard work these students did.
