Chinese New Year Dragons
As part of our school's Culture Day celebration first grade students
learned about the celebrations and traditions surrounding Chinese New Year.
We focused on the importance and symbolism of the dragon in creating
these very colorful pieces. I found the idea on pintrest and decided to
make some adjustments to make it fit for my students. Students
worked hard on the concept of symmetry as they used a red thread to create the
shape of their dragon and layered the body portions using pastels. Students
finished their dragons with construction paper for the head and tail and added
glittery fireworks, another Chinese New Year tradition to complete the image
that is a very common sight both in China and Chinese communities around the world during this special holiday.
